Are you trying to put God in a man-sized box?

If you are a saint and say, "I will never do this or that," in all probability this will be exactly what God will require of you. There was never a more inconsistent being on this earth than our Lord, but He was never inconsistent with His Father.

Oswald Chambers wrote this in his devotional "My Utmost for His Highest" (you can read the whole devotional here). The point of the entry is for us to quit thinking of God in human terms. He is not just "the big guy upstairs" who decides how things are going to go on a whim. He is almighty God, the Creator of the universe and all it contains. He not only made it all, He knows it all. We can tell God absolutely nothing that He doesn't already know. We can not "overburden" Him with our prayers. We can not assume that He will eventually get fed up with our foul-ups. We can not think that He is not thinking of us. All of those attitudes are putting Him in a man-sized box.

It is very human to assume that someone else doesn't have all the facts. It is human to assume that someone doesn't want to be burdened with more needs. It is human to assume that someone else will eventually tire of us. It is human to think that someone else will forget us for a season. All of these are very human traits and very much not anything at all like God.

It is God who has "clothed" the lilies of the field and the birds of the air. It is God who even has the hairs on our head numbered. It is God who knew that I would sin and provided a payment for my sin debt in the ultimate sacrifice of His only Son, Jesus. It is God who knows more than I could ever even think or imagine. And frankly, it is God that I will trust in even before it looks like there is no other option.

Are things looking good for you right now? Trust God. Are things looking rough for you right now? Trust God. As a matter of fact, no matter what your circumstances or needs or complaints or rejoicings, trust God. He is the only one who can resolve every problem, fill every need, and guide every step. If you think any less of God than as the ever involved, ever caring Father, then you are making Him out to be less than He is. And it may work in your feeble imagination, but it is absolutely nothing like God Almighty. He just won't fit in a man-sized box.
